The Marketization of Citizenships, A Golden Ticket to the Olympics
Athletes changing allegiance is becoming more common. Marie Branser, a German judoka, received her Democratic Republic of the Congo citizenship just months after applying and hopes to represent the DRC in Tokyo. Table tennis player Xiaona Shan, however, waited years to become German but won silver in Rio when she finally did. This week Sports Life looks into the marketization of citizenships.
