They Still Live is a journey into the ancestral roots of identity. Photography by Detour (Thomas Evans) and African Art provided by The Paul Hamilton Collection combine to inspire the examination of one’s roots and cultural history. What is the African in African American? How can personal definition evolve from the exploration of one’s ancestral fabric?
The photographs and sculptures featured in this exhibition are meant to be liberating, eye opening and informative in nature. They Still Live seeks to motivate individuals to discover their heritage and perhaps be surprised, educated or affirmed about those discoveries. Through the power of DNA testing (provided by ancestry.com), an individuals lineage emerges. This lineage alongside the many beautiful and historic works of African Art connect us with the ancestors of the past and thus we can truly say — They Still Live.
