Event Details

Dear friends of Mother Earth,

The 800 Standing Rock Water Protectors who were arrested and who must now face trials need our assistance.

For many of us who couldn’t make it to Standing Rock, North Dakota, or for many of us who weren’t able to put our body and life on the line and risk arrest by protecting the water and Mother Earth, this is a very tangible and practical way in which we can reach out and assist these courageous Water Protectors.  100% of proceeds collected from the Benefit Concert and Educational Event will go towards the legal defense of these 800 Water Protectors.

Also, for those who will not be able to attend the Benefit Concert and Educational Event, at the bottom of the attached flyer is the website for the Water Protector Legal Collective, which is providing and coordinating the legal defense.  https://waterprotectorlegal.org

Please read the inspiring invitation letter below.

Please share this announcement and invitation letter with all of your friends and contacts, and help us to spread this invitation to as many people as possible.

Thank you for your support and awareness.

Dear Friends,

I am writing to invite you to join me at Standing Rock Forward — a benefit concert and educational event taking place on Sunday, April 9th, from 12- 4 pm at the Mercury Cafe in Denver.  (Doors open at 11:30 am.)  Several of us who are friends and allies of the Four Winds American Indian Council are co-hosting this event.

All proceeds will go to provide legal defense for Red Fawn Fallis and for the other 800-plus arrested Water Protectors.  (See the attached flyer for more information.)

You might ask, “Why go to an event about Standing Rock now?  Isn’t that over?”

Well, first of all, it’s not over for Red Fawn, who has been in jail in North Dakota since October 27th, when she was set up, arrested and framed with a serious offense while serving as a medic on the front lines of the resistance against the Dakota Access Pipeline at Standing Rock.  Red Fawn, a strong young Lakota community leader and an American Indian Movement member who makes her home in the Denver area, faces serious Federal charges and a stiff legal battle against the colonizer forces assembled against her, and she needs the very best legal team that can be mounted to defend her.

It’s also not over for the other 800 Water Protectors from all over the country who were arrested while resisting the pipeline, and who must now face trials in North Dakota. All these courageous and principled individuals need and deserve competent defense counsel.

Beyond that, it’s not over for the tens of thousands of Water Protectors who converged on Standing Rock to defend the inherent rights of Native Americans and to protect our Mother Earth. Whether indigenous people or allies, their experiences at Standing Rock lit a fire inside them that will not be extinguished, and that now carries them forward like a Lake Oahe current, determined to continue the prayerful work they engaged in there.

And it’s not over for the rest of us either. We may not have made it to Standing Rock, but Standing Rock made it to us! It woke us up to the imperatives and the real possibility of uniting as “one human tribe” to defend and live in harmony with this planet and all its inhabitants.

And it woke many of us up to the unspeakable injustices perpetrated on our Native American brothers and sisters, beginning in the 1400s with the colonizers’ hypocritical, self-serving and deadly Doctrine of Christian Discovery — which created the fiction of the inferiority of indigenous people in order to justify depriving them of their land and rights — and continuing to today, as evidenced by the shameful way federal and state government entities trampled on the rights of the Sioux Nations regarding the Dakota Access Pipeline.

If, as I do, you recognize the incredibly transformative power of the movement that caught fire at Standing Rock, and you know that we must all keep working, praying, and supporting together to overcome the Doctrine of Discovery and protect our Mother Earth, then you won’t want to miss Standing Rock Forward on April 9th. I look forward to seeing you there!
