The Blue Bench is pleased to present our Safety and Empowerment Skills, in partnership with Reflective Wellness on Saturday, March 7th, 2020.
The Safety and Empowerment Skills class works with participants to develop verbal and physical assertiveness and self-protection skills. The course is open to the public for female-identified, trans-identified, gender non-conforming, and non-binary participants age 13 years old and up.
Our instructors, experienced in self-defense skills, train participants in techniques designed to be effective against a perpetrator regardless of the perpetrator’s size and strength. We provide a toolbox approach to equip participants with a range of options from verbal assertiveness skills to physical self-protection techniques because we recognize a diversity of experiences requires a diversity of options.*
The Blue Bench believes in empowering those who want to learn and practice self-protection techniques with the opportunity to do so in a safe space, with specific attention to the dynamics of sexual violence that disproportionately impact community members who are female-identified, trans-identified, gender non-conforming, non-binary and gender expansive.
A donation of $15 is suggested, though not required, for participation. For details and to register, contact Libby Anderson at firstname.lastname@example.org.
*This course recognizes that a person being targeted may choose not to use any of the techniques, or may be unable to use any techniques covered, based on the unique circumstances they experience. All content of this class will be within the framework that sexual assault is never the fault of the victim- it is only the fault of the perpetrator who makes the choice to assault another person.
