(Denver) For Artist Dan Drossman, creation is his catharsis. Having lived with chronic pain for much of his life, he has come to understand the complexities of the mind-body interaction and how pain can simultaneously be a brutal physical reality and a manifestation of the brain. He explores this conflict through his artwork, embracing an intuitive process that allows him to connect to his unconscious—the invisible—letting it explode visually—and visibly—into consciousness and onto the canvas. His paintings and drawings merge elements of graffiti, cartooning, and abstraction to create a unique language.
Drossman is proud to announce a solo exhibition of his paintings and drawings—his first since moving Denver from New York City in 2018. Outlined Against the Visiblewill be on view July 5 – August 23, 2019 at Pendula Architects Collective, 863 Santa Fe Drive in Denver’s popular Art District on Santa Fe. The public is welcome to visit the show during regular business hours at the collective, Monday through Friday, 9-5 pm, by appointment, and during the following special events:
Opening Reception – First Friday, July 5, 6-10 pm
First Friday Reception Friday, August 2nd, 6-10 pm
Closing Reception – Friday, August 23, 6-10 pm
The exhibit will showcase an ongoing series of work that delves into the artist’s psyche, with the goal of aligning the medium with his mental states while giving visual cues. The work is accessible to his audience through a deft use of line, color and other formal elements. Works range in size from small to large, and employ marker, acrylic, charcoal and other media on paper and canvas. Drossman describes the motivation behind his artwork:
“My curiosity lies in the relationship between the visible and the invisible, and the point in which these boundaries meet. In my process, it’s the moment where unconscious intuition is confronted by conscious intellect. In the image itself, it is where abstraction begins to suggest figuration. It’s here where I love to play.”
Drossman grew up in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, received his BA from Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina, and holds an MFA from The School of Visual Arts in New York. He has had solo and group exhibitions throughout New York and North Carolina. He is currently lives in Denver, Colorado and is represented by Ruler Art in New York City (www.rulerart.com). He can be found working in his space at Bitfactory Studios on Santa Fe Drive, or online at his newly refreshed website www.dandrossmanart.comand on Instagram @dandrossmanart.
Pendula is a collaborative of Architects and related professions. A vital community of individuals who have joined their intellectual resources to explore, enhance, and promote their practice.
