One Night Stand Theater explores paradise, the underworld and other final destinations in “One Night Stand in Heaven and Hell” on Sunday, April 15, 7:00 p.m. at the Vintage Theater in Aurora.

This one-night-only production features short plays and stories about Heaven, Hell and other aspects of the afterlife:

  • The prince of darkness summons an elderly cat lover to Hell in “Mrs. Twiller Takes a Trip” by Lael J. Littke.
  • Getting into Heaven is the easy part for “The New Guy” by Jacob Rainville Dorn.
  • An unlucky teacher struggles to escape eternity’s waiting room in “The Gatekeeper” by John Christopher Wolter.
  • Crossing the river to the underworld proves troublesome for Ancient Greek travelers in “Save a Penny for the Ferryman” by Marianne Page.
  • The patron saint of comedians reveals a heavenly campaign to eject a bad Pope in “God’s Religion” by Edith Weiss.
  • The journey to the afterlife is by way of roller coaster in “What a Ride” by Susan Hickey.

“The short plays in this evening of staged readings are mainly comedies, both light-hearted and irreverent, with some touching moments as well,” says James O’Leary, One Night Stand Theater’s artistic director. “The show features varied and distinctive renditions of the afterlife from the vibrant imaginations of our playwrights.”

One Night Stand Theater is a Denver-area theater company that has presented one-night-only evenings of theatrical staged readings over the past eight years, each with its own theme. Performances have featured folk tales, American history, old-time radio, Hollywood, and plays about war, romance, and the Bible.

“Life in the Theater” takes place on Sunday, April 15 at 7:00 p.m. at the Vintage Theatre, located at 1468 Dayton St., one half-block south of Colfax Avenue in Old Downtown Aurora. The evening is recommended for mature audiences. Tickets are $10. To make reservations, e-mail tickets@onenightstandtheater.org or phone 303-725-4959.
