Event Details

The Colorado Wind Ensemble presents world-renowned clarinetist Richard Stoltzman and pianist son Peter John Stoltzman in a tribute to Leonard Bernstein’s 100-year anniversary with Legacies on Saturday, April 7, at 7:30pm at the King Center, 855 Lawrence Way, Denver 80204.  The father-son duo will perform Bernstein’s Prelude, Fugue and Riffs and Scott McAllister’s Black Dog with the CWE; and Bernstein’s Sonata for Clarinet.  Conductor David Kish leads the CWE in Oscar Navarro’s Downey Overture, Gustav Holst’s Somerset Rhapsody, and a new commission by guest composer Scott McAllister.

Richard Stoltzman is among the world’s leading clarinetists, known for his wide classical repertory and for an interest in world, jazz, and popular music that prompted him to begin making “crossover” recordings long before they became a marketing trend.  He made his New York debut in 1974, and was the first clarinetist to ever give a solo recital in New York’s Carnegie Hall. He has won both the Avery Fisher Prize in 1977 for career development, and in 1986 the Avery Fisher Artist Award, the first wind player to earn it. In his career he has frequently played and recorded both jazz and classical music. He has appeared as soloist with many of the major symphony orchestras and conductors of the world. He plays also with chamber ensembles such as the Beaux Arts Trio and the Emerson Quartet, and has appeared in many major festivals on four continents. He has appeared with classical artists including Yo-Yo Ma, James Levine, and the New York Philharmonic. In addition, he has performed or recorded with popular and jazz artists Eddie Gomez, Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Woody Herman’s Thundering Herd, Judy Collins, Mel Tormé, Gary Burton, George Shearing, and Joe Williams.

The concert takes place at the King Center Concert Hall on the Auraria campus.  Parking is FREE in the 7th Street Garage next door to the King Center.
