About the Exhibitions:

This exhibition features recent and new works in painting and installation by artist Melissa Furness. These works explore the life of the art object and the environments that they inhabit, working to build a visual dialog that extends from the internal to the external by testing the limits of narrative that exists within the work and beyond it through process and intervention. The exhibition features indoor and outdoor works, as the artist pushes the viewers’ expectations of painting as an illusion of space, its objectness and presentation as a precious gallery object or historic museum artifact or monument.

This exhibit is a re-presentation and integration of familiar images with the intent of providing viewers a focus on the visual poetry of the overlooked and mundane. Simulacra, used in the 16th century to describe a representation, such as a statue or a painting, especially of a god and by the late 19th century as a secondary association of inferiority: an image without the substance or qualities of the original, seemed the perfect title for this collection of artworks. As a sculptor, whose art practice centers on foundry and primarily on reproducing copies of everyday objects in metal, this exhibition title captures the essence of Rian Kerrane’s process and concepts.
