Event Details

First Christian Church is presenting the chamber choir Abendmusik, directed by Rob Ryder and accompanied by Charlene Noland. They will perform Abendmusik (evening music) spanning four centuries, from Buxtehude, Brahms and Rheinberger to Messiaen and Piazzola. The program will culminate with the premiere of Abend Magnificat, a major choral work collaboratively composed by seven Colorado Springs composers who are members of Abendmusik. A free will offering will be taken.
Abendmusik is presenting a concert entitled “Abendmusik Sings Abendmusik.”  The chamber choir will perform music that inspired the group’s name and exemplifies its 43 year history in the Pikes Peak region.  With a particular emphasis on the secular tradition of Abendlieder (Evening Songs), and the sacred traditions of Abendmusik (Evensong), the concert’s repertoire will span four centuries of choral music.  The program features music of Buxtehude, Messiaen, Brahms, Rheinberger and Stanford, as well as choral music derived from or composed by contemporary composers Astor Piazolla, Ben Folds, Tuck Aikin, and Daniel Elder.  The program will culminate with the premiere of Abend Magnificat, a major choral work collaboratively composed by seven Colorado Springs composers who are members of Abendmusik.  The concert will be directed by Rob Ryder and accompanied by Charlene Noland.
Abendmusik is an auditioned community choir that was formed in 1974 as an in-service performing group for music educators from Colorado Springs School District 11. The choir is now comprised of accomplished singers and musicians from all walks of life.  Membership includes singers who range in age from early 20s to mid 80s and share a common love of performing choral music and creating musical experiences for audiences throughout the region.     Abendmusik has been featured in performance for the Colorado Music Educators Association (CMEA) on multiple occasions, has toured with the United States Air Force Academy Band, and has made guest appearances with orchestras throughout the state.  The choir is a participating member of the Colorado Springs Choralaborative Project.  To learn more about Abendmusik, please visit their website at http://www.Abendmusikchorus.org.
Rob Ryder received his B.A. degree in Music Theory and Composition from Stanford University. He pursued additional music studies at Colorado College, studying choral repertoire with Don Jenkins.  Rob taught vocal music in the Colorado Springs public schools from 1974 until 1980.  Rob’s compositions and arrangements have been performed by numerous community, university, military, church, and school groups throughout the country.  He is a past winner of the Colorado Music Educators Association (CMEA) award for composition, and has been a featured composer for the Colorado All-State Choir, and the Colorado Vocal Arts Ensemble. Rob has been a member of Abendmusik since the group’s inception in 1974.  He has served as co-director of Abendmusik since 2001.  In addition to his musical pursuits, Rob served for 33 years with Centura Health where he held various positions, including Chief Administrative Officer of Penrose Community Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Corporate Vice President of Learning and Leadership Development for Centura Health,  and CEO of St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center in Pueblo, Colorado.  Rob retired from his healthcare career in 2013.
