Shine Music Festival

The first of its kind, radically accessible music event is coming to Denver, Colorado on August 8, 2021. Shine Music Festival, a 1-day music event, will be held at Levitt Pavilion from 1:00-7:30pm (Doors open at 12:00pm). This festival will combine the staples of a music festival with adaptive technology and a comprehensive accessibility plan – resulting in creating an inclusive space where people of all abilities can collectively enjoy a day filled with music, food, art, and fun.

Music lovers will enjoy a two-stage experience. The first (main) stage will feature acts such as:

• The Score: LA based alternative rock duo Eddie Anthony and Edan Dover.

• Denver All-Star Jam: A collaboration of local Colorado musicians.

• Ryan Chrys & The Rough Cuts: 2019 Band of the Year – Colorado Country Music Hall of Fame.

• El Javi: Denver based artist who incorporates elements of flamenco, progressive rock, classical, and folk.

The second stage will feature several local band acts such as:

• Float Like A Buffalo: 303 Magazine’s “New Music You Should Know”

• Graham Good & The Painters: 2021 BandWagon Magazine Battle of the Bands winner.

• Damon Wood: Former James Brown guitarist brand-new band debut.

• Bottlerocket Hurricane: Six-piece bluegrass and beyond band.

Plans being incorporated to design this all-inclusive, accessible, and immersive music experience include:

• Full Body Sound will have devices that allow the deaf and hard of hearing to experience the full spectrum of music.

• Feel the Beat will be providing a bone-conduction dance floor that allows the deaf and hard of hearing to feel sound through vibrational energy.

• Braille and large print maps, schedules and menus will be provided for the audience who are visually impaired or blind. We have even incorporated Braille into our merchandise!

• To accommodate the audience with neurological disorders, there will be a sensory tent with noise cancelling headphones and certified therapists.

• Accessible pathways throughout, ensuring easy access to the entire event.

Music has the power to heal, to cleanse, and to uplift your entire being. The feeling of music is translated into thoughts and emotions. It surrounds our entire body like pure energy and moves us in a way nothing else can.

For over one billion people – or 15% of the world’s population – attending a live music event is impossible due to lack of accessibility. Shine Music, a 501c3 non-profit, has worked with organizations that represent various groups serving the disabled community, to create a space free from barriers that would prevent some from attending.

The Dip 

Hailing from Seattle, The Dip is an electrifying seven-piece ensemble that melds vintage rhythm and blues with classic pop storytelling. A book club reading and ranting about scripts

Read & Rant a book club exploring plays written primarily by women*. Read two or three scripts a month and meet at Tattered Cover on Colfax to discuss the works.  Join Athena Project’s Executive Producer, Angela Astle, and Literary Manager, Darce Beck, May 18th at 6:30PM at our free monthly book club.  Learn what makes a good script; how reading a play is different from a book or story; converse with invited guests as part of our monthly discussions. Read & Rant is just one of our programs aimed to raise awareness of the underrepresentation of women’s stories on stage.

The plays this month will focus on varied aspects of military life in conjunction with National Armed Forces Day, May 16, an annual salute to all branches of the US military. As one of our playwrights this month is Denver based, our invited guests are Colorado playwrights who will speak to the art and craft of playwriting.

On a hot summer night in Veracruz Mexico circa 1982, Consuela Espinoza stumbled out of her dilapidated shanty and into Rock N Roll history. What began as an innocent night of snorting horse tranquillizers in a hotel room with seven members of the village jai alai team went on to produce the greatest metal band to ever live. Unhampered by a steady regime of tequila and ill advised sumo lessons, nine months later five bastard children where born. Unable to care for her hungry offspring and concerned that motherhood would seriously interfere with her Tuesday night Karaoke league, Consuela hastily packed the babies into the saddlebags of a burro and sent her children off to America in search of a better life. Against all odds, 14 years later, and nearly dead from dehydration, the burro knelt down to drink from the stagnant waters of the Rio Grande just outside of Juarez Mexico –mere yards from the U.S. border. With one fleeting burst of energy the brothers Espinoza cinco climbed from their leather restraints and scampered the vast reaches of the river, collapsing onto the sweet amber hue of American soil. As if by destiny, lodged in the sand beneath their tanned faces was a record sleeve upon which were the words “PARANOID” and “BLACK SABBATH”. For many years to follow, this definitive black metal album served not only as a teacher and a mentor..but also as a friend. From these bleak and humble begins grew the seed that would eventually be the band we know today. Often referred to as the greatest heavy metal band to ever live..always referred to as…METALACHI.

Held annually in more than 600 communities nationwide, the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s^® is the world’s largest fundraiser for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. This inspiring event calls on participants of all ages and abilities to join the fight against the disease.

We’re moving forward with plans to host Walk to End Alzheimer’s^® in person this fall. The health and safety of our participants, staff and volunteers remain our top priorities as we make decisions about event details in your community, and we’ll continue to offer options to participate online and in your neighborhood.

While there is no fee to register for Walk, all participants are encouraged to raise critical funds that allow the Alzheimer’s Association to provide 24/7 care and support and advance research toward methods of prevention, treatment and, ultimately, a cure.
